Elegant and Creative Ways to Maximize Space Under Your Stairs

We’ve seen a lot of indoor arrangements where the space under the stairs is completely neglected. This usually happens because the owners fear not to overcrowd the living room or hallway. In this post we would like to present 15 creative and elegant ways on how to effectively use the space under your stairs without “damaging” your home’s appearance. In fact, we think the ideas below will help improve the overall design of the rooms where they are put to practice. If you are living in a small crib and feel the need for more space, you might consider improvising a bookcase, a home office or an entertaining area. We particularly like the cozy extendable bed in the first photo, which could turn out to be a good solution when receiving guests. The aquarium and fireplace are two other original methods of making the most out of the area beneath the stairs. Check out the photos for more inspiration and if you guys have any more ideas, we would love to read them.

Harley Davidson 2011 Superlow

In the seminal 80′s teen movie “Risky Business”, a baby-faced and still-sane Tom Cruise, anxious about his future, is consoled by his pal. His friend, with great gravitas, tells him: “Sometimes you gotta say, ‘what the fuck’. ‘What the fuck’ gives you freedom. Freedom brings opportunity. Opportunity… makes your future.” If made today, that entire scene could’ve been replaced by that friend shushing Tom’s whining and simply pointing at the 2011 Harley Davidson Superlow. Powerful V-twin engine, great curves and iconic detailing, a smooth ride and that legendary roar. Sometimes you gotta say ‘what the fuck’. But it’s way better if you ride off on a Harley after you do. $7999

Timberland Wodehouse Chukka Boots

They don’t make ‘em like they use to, but Timberland’s gonna try. Constructed of premium Horween leather, the Wodehouse chukkas are hand finished for a well-worn and -care-for appearance, giving each pair distinctive characteristics. Generic Surplus Wharf Wool Sneakers

Generic Surplus sneakers are never quite what they appear to be. They all kind of look like sneakers in that they have laces and soles, but something always seems a little out of place. With the Wharf Wool, there’s a bit of high-top, a bit of chukka, and pieces of wool, canvas, suede, and rubber. Somehow they manage to combine these disparate elements into a package that not only looks “bad” (in the good sense), you could probably get away with wearing them to work (we’re doing it at the stylistically uptight office right now and no one seems to mind). They’re not quite sneakers and they’re not quite chukkas so we’ll just stick to what we know and call them awesome. $65

Concrete Wall Wallpaper

Unfinished concrete walls, for some reason, have a pleasing aesthetic. We’re not sure why: industrial simplicity? Rugged beauty? Did we really just write “rugged beauty”? Truth remains that it’s attractive. And the truth also remains that it doesn’t exactly occur frequently in most residential construction. So unless you’re living in a parking garage, consider papering a wall or two with photo-realistic concrete wall wallpaper. A variety of styles and textures are available, some plain concrete, some bricked, others brightly colored with graffiti. Either way, it’s a step up from beige. $180 per sq. meter

Libratone Speaker

Ah those crazy Danish. They’ve come up with another great piece of design. The Libratone Speaker is completely wireless, but unlike other wireless speakers, sound quality is not sacrificed. Its unique design projects sound not just forward and out but behind as well, reflecting off nearby walls and creating a more rich, robust quality to the music. Beyond that, because it’s wireless you can place it and carry it to where it’s needed–out to the patio, into the bedroom, etc. The handsome speaker doesn’t even look like a speaker, as it’s upholstered in a understated felt cloth. Check em out, unless you like the twang of that portable iPod dock. $595

WeWood Wooden Watches

Note: Can I make something like this with our CNC router / laser cutter? hrmm

Do you own a wood watch? Neither do we. We wood, if there was a suitable offering from any brands on the market, but up until this point there really wasn’t. Then there was WeWood. With a complete line of chronos and day/dates, WeWood lets you feel all rustic and manly without ever having to leave the house. Each watch is 100% wood, hypo-allergenic, and has a Miyota movement. If you feel bad about the whole sacrificing a tree thing, fret not. For each watch that WeWood sells they plant a tree. This is exactly the type of green movement sustainability we can support because, at the end of the day, it’s a damn good looking watch. There’s nothing more satisfying than doing some good and looking good in the process. $119

Facebook Friend Poster

Maybe not a 'friend show off contest' but possible a group poster.. Everyone connected to the IDSA facebookgroup?

Let’s be honest here people, Facebook is just one big ass Internet popularity contest. Quite frankly, we have no problem with that. Judging by the amount of friends you have, you don’t either. One enterprising grad student wants to connect to your Facebook friends list and print your 200 – 2000 friends in 20″ x 40″ (poster size) size so you laud your glorious victory over everyone. Get it with a number of border sizes and colors and then throw a party. You know, as long as you know your “friends” well enough in real life to get them to come over. Trust us, when he finds a way to print our 35000 friends on a single poster every one of you is totally invited to the party… $20

Patagonia Wanaka Down Jacket

There are a lot of things in life you have control over: shoes, blood alcohol content, and choice of girlfriend to name a few. There are other things in life you have little control over: thread count, favorite sports team, choice of girlfriend, and the weather. If you live in a city that isn’t a comfortable 80 degrees year round, you’re going to need some clothes for those times when hell freezes over. Since it’s getting to be that time of year, you better start shopping now. The Patagonia Wanaka Down Jacket doesn’t just have a ridiculous name, it’s got some ridiculous features. Fleece lined pockets to keep your hands warm. 600-fill down to keep your nipples in check. Waterproofing and and insulated hood to keep you dry from top to bottom. All that utility and it still looks good enough to wear to the bar. $349

Restoration Hardware Leather Gadget Cases

Restoration Hardware is a great place to pick up the latest and greatest in the world of “vintage,” but actually buying anything there normally requires bartering with firstborn children or organs. Unless of course all you’re looking for is a sweet leather condom for your latest and greatest gadget. Artisan iPhone leather case? $39. Artisan iPad Jacket? $99. Kindle? $69. Warm chestnut leather hue (infused with bark and leaf pigments) with topstitching, coupled with strap or magnetic closures, and the ability to wipe clean? It would be priceless, but we’re pretty sure the only thing priceless and leather clad is Carrie-Anne Moss. Until we can keep that in our pocket we’re going to simply refer to these affordable leather holsters as awesome. $39+

Clankworks Pinch Stand

Kickstands are so fourth grade. You don’t spend upwards of hundreds – if not thousands – of dollars on a sweet new bike and not shell out for some way to display it. You could hand it on the wall, ceiling, or somewhere in the garage using some crazy Rube Goldberg sort of contraption, but that’s a lot of time and effort that could be spent riding. The Clankworks Pinch Stand is a simple – yet very effective – way to not only vertically secure your bike, but display it for everyone that passes through. The two bamboo spring slats are secured with aluminum hardware and use the weight of your bike to firmly lock the rear wheel in place. When you’re ready to take it to the mean streets, all you have to do is lift your bike out of the adjustable pinch and you’re ready to go. $89 Source

Jack Spade Wool Felt Boot Pack

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when it happened, but at some point in the last decade the rein of the briefcase quietly came to an end. In our search for a more functional and stylish option we dabbled around with messenger bags, succumbed to an infatuation with classic backpacks, and even flirted with, albeit briefly, bowling bags (perhaps we were drinking). Now, Jack Spade, the company famous for producing high-end bags for men, offers another option, and this one seems to get everything right. The Wool Felt Boot Pack is stylish, as you would expect with any product from Jack Spade, and functional, as you would expect with a bag inspired by military gear. Plus, as with any product in the Wool Felt Collection, you’re getting a super durable product. Now, let’s never mention that little one-night stand with the European man purse again. $375

Hard Graft Phone Wallet

Carrying a phone on your person at all times isn’t even a question anymore. Even if you’re not phoning home like E.T., you probably need to sext, pay some bills, update some databases, sell some books, or take care whatever other ridiculous (read: awesome) need the iPhone fills in your life. Couple the iPhone with some credit cards and a set of headphones and you have everything you need on a daily basis. The Hard Graft Phone Wallet is the best way to keep everything important in one place. Asphalt Grey vegetable tanned leather and grey wool keep your goodies protected and the separate iPhone pocket is designed to work with a bumpered iPhone 4 for the tighter fit all men are looking for. 8 slots for cards – or cash if you’re so inclined – keep your plastic so close to your phone you’ll never forget them at a bar again. $90

Transit Issue Smartphone Wallet

The iPhone 4 is great. Really, we mean that. There’s an app for trading stocks, doing your laundry, foreplay, instant messaging, drinking beer, and just about anything else you want to do. Unless, of course, all you want to do is protect your precious app machine from a precarious situation involving six inches of air and a lot of broken glass. The fact of the matter is that if you drop the phone it’s pretty much done for. The Apolis Activism Transit Issue Wallet aims to fix that, along with the problem of having too much shit in your pockets. Natural leather in black, dark brown, light brown, and natural colors formed into a phone case (with quick release tabs) and combined with billfold slots for your cash and cards. It’s like buying Diet Coke with red wine already in the can. $68

L.L. Bean Saltwash Canvas Backpack

Maybe it’s the wanderlust, or constantly being chained to a desk, or our Boy Scout adventures from our childhood, but we frequently find ourselves on the verge of picking up and just adventuring into the wilderness. Unlike the urban jungle we’re accustomed to, a messenger bag just isn’t going to cut it. You can’t (easily) operate an axe with a messenger bag on. Cooking (for survival only) isn’t exactly a walk in the park. You need a backpack, and not just your average, run of the mill Jansport. The L.L. Bean Saltwash Canvas Backpack may be just what you need. Weighing in at 26oz., the saltwashed cotton canvas backpack has three easy to access external pockets and one interior zipper pocket (plaid lined for bonus style points). Authentic leather closures and straps complete the look. $145

HEX Watch Band for iPod Nano

Most things in life get bigger over time – athletes, fast-food sodas, Kim Kardashian’s sofa cushion imprint. When it comes to electronics however, it’s the exact opposite. Computers get smaller, TV’s get thinner and iPod’s get compressed to fractions of their original size. What makes the iPod Nano great is also what makes it challenging. Where do you keep the tiny thing without losing it? The HEX Watch Band turns your 6th Gen iPod Nano into a sick looking watch. Just pop your iPod into one of the silicone bands, hook up your headphones, and you’ve got a timepiece-mp3 player right on your wrist. It even has integrated buttons so you don’t lose any functionality. Plus, they come in solid, bright colors like the ones Toy Watch made popular. Just remember not to give anyone the time when that “one” Britney Spears track is playing. $23

FLEXiT

Whenever you’re trying to fix something in a cramped, dark area – be it under the hood of your car, behind your entertainment unit, where ever – the trickiest part is usually not the work itself, but rather just seeing what you’re doing. Sure, you can attempt to cradle a flashlight under your chin or strap one around your head like a miner, but because of the tight areas you usually end up only making a few entertaining shadow puppets. To remedy all these scenarios Striker created the FLEXiT. The FLEXiT is a flexible hands free task light that’s full of uses, ingenuity, and capital letters. It’s as thin as a few sheets of paper making it easy to slip into any dark crevice you happen to be working in, and can even wrap around tubes, magnetically attach to metal objects and illuminate an entire room. $30

From wine bottles to illegal baseball bats, cork has often been a material you put in other items. Now, you can put something in cork, namely your cash, credit cards and pieces of identification. Jack Spade takes the oft-underused product and utilizes it to make the Cork Billfold and Cork Flat Wallet. While these little carry-alls look subtly stylish, they’re also quite smart. Cork is extremely durable and flexible, two features that come in handy when you’re jamming, say, another receipt in there, George Costanza. Plus, cork is also water resistant so you don’t have to be fearful of ruining your investment and the money you’d use to buy a new one in the process. $119
